Don Pedros a bit pricey, but worth it!

We had our last meal at Don Pedros. We had avoided going there earlier since it was a bit pricey, but we had money left to spend, plus they also accept credit cards. The only mistake we was ordering 2 meals. They were so gigantic we couldn't finish them, we should of shared! They have a great Tuna steak, cooked fantastically rare with the best Onion Rings ever.

We were very disappointed in Don Pedros. The menu was boring, the ahi completely overdone, the prices ridiculous. We would not dine here again - boring, expensive, bland "American" food is not what we go to Mexico for.

We ate lunch at Don Pedros. Food was good but seemed like everyone was very disorganized. Had to keep asking about our orders. Took 45 minutes to get another drink. A few nights later we decided to try pizza and take it back to our house to eat. Ordered two shrimp with bacon. Got home and we still can't decide what it was exactly that we brought home. I don't think we will go there next year when we return. Prices seemed a bit high, but not unreasonable.

Beware! We were happy with our food, but unsure how safe our credit card was. The card was used only twice in our 10 days in Mexico - once at the Thrifty car rental, where they ran it in front of us, and once at Don Pedro's, where they took the card downstairs and didn't return it for about 20 minutes - until I went and asked them for it.

When we returned to the US, viola! There was a charge for an airline ticket from Guadalajara on the Visa card. Unsure which place did it....

:( Tried to take some food out to the beach from Don Pedros. After waiting 30 minutes for two appetizers the meal and check came. I was overcharged $10 on the bill and they had no plastic flat ware for the beach?
Food was, at best, mediocre.

I was always find it funny to see the "Haters" busy typing away their petty digs and in some cases serious slander. These haters are most likely expat burnouts leaching off of the local community. Stop spending all your time in the internet cafe maligning the institutions that have made Sayulita. These haters probably don't know that Don Pedro's built the malecon for the town (93), financed development the first sewer plant (94), and have employed a member of every local family at one time or another. To get the truth, ask some of the old school locals, not these recent haters who think they've "discovered" Sayulita. I digress...Don Pedro's food is top notch -- there is no comparison in Nayarit, let alone Sayulita.

Don Pedro's is a world-class restuarant that serves both gourmet and comfort cuisine. I've been visiting Sayulita for ten years and one of the major reasons why is Don Pedro's. This restaurant never ceases to amaze me and I do believe it's on par with the best in San Francisco -- my hometown. At the beach grill downstairs, I love the fish sandwich, Asian spare ribs, and thin crust pizzas. Upstairs for dinner, some of my favorites are seafood pasta, fish of the day, and the filet mignon -- always perfect! The Chef comes up with weekly and holiday specials that are fantastic as well. I've recommended Don Pedro's to scores of people visiting the PV area and everyone has had a wonderful experience. Can't wait till my next Sayulita trip... :)

I am sorry to see that you have classified all negative responses to "Don Pedros" as being haters. That is so wrong. And am extremely sorry to see that you view expats as leaching off the local community. We had very poor service at "Don Pedros" but, the food was good. Service was in fact bad twice while we were there. I think it is great that they have done so much for the community. I am sure they are not the only ones that need to be mentioned. We have been coming to Sayulita since early 80's and totally love it there. My brother-in-law donated and had installed the playground equipment at the school before he was killed in an auto accident. He was building a house there at the time. I do think there are other restaurants in town that should be hailed as excellent choices also.

I too am sorry to see you classify all negative responses to Don Pedros as "haters." They very well may have done great things for the community and that's all well and good, but that does not mean that someone has to reclassify a bad dinner experience there. I don't have to like the food just because of the history. Sayulita has many great restaurants and many of my posts attest to that. Don Pedros was not one of them for us. I'm glad the meals have been great for you, but we personally enjoyed El Costeneos food MUCH more than Don Pedros. I would definitely not call the food world class or top notch at Don Pedros.

I agree Plum "El Costenos" was by far our most enjoyable. We were there almost daily, if not for dinner but for their fantastic quaqamole and margaritas. When we started going there in early 80's it was "Rupertos" and the food is just as good. I remember Rupertos getting fresh shrimp off the shrimp boats and serving it right away. Yum, as well as diving for lobsters for us and serving it for dinner. I agree goodwill for the community is great, but I want something for my money that I can enjoy.

Does anyone know when Don Pedro's or El Costenos will be closing for summer? We hope they don't close at all, but I'm sure they will. Thanks!!

Recently got back from a first time vacation to Sayulita. The highlight of our trip was dining at Don Pedro's. The food was absolutely out of this world. Probably one of the top dining experiences I've ever had. Can't wait till the next vacation.

We had a wonderful meal at Don Pedro's on our first night in town. They had 'lost' our reservation for 10, but accomodated us quickly with a table on the beach which was lovely. They were also out of several of the appetizers, but the drinks and food were good and the service was friendly. It was cooler than we were expecting and one of the waiters even lent my mother-in-law his jacket! All in all we had a really nice time there.

just returned from sayulita tonight. had dinner one night at don pedro's - fish was overcooked, mashed potatoes were gluey, and overall felt like the experience was a waste of a dinner. would much rather had dinner elsewhere - felt like we missed out on a chance to have a great dinner somewhere else. while I'll definitely be returning to sayulita, I won't be eating at don pedro's again.

Thats really disappointing. We had a great dinner at Don Pedros last week. The fresh lobster was amazing, the oysters were great and all of the sides were done perfectly. It sounds like they are having some consistancy issues. If that was the only time you were there I would give it another chance and see what happens.

I am completely stumped that a few of you had such a bad experience at Don Pedro's. I am a gourmet cook so I am very critical and I have yet to have a bad meal at Don Pedro's. Everything from the Lamb to the Pasta Puntanesca (sp) has always been delicious. Breakfast is always great as well. Give it another try and I think you will be pleased.

I like to eat well as you do, Boobala, and even i enjoy many times the food, last time i was very dissapointed. First, the menu is boring, for a high class restaurant i would expect from them to change the menu at least once a month. Second, since its always the same, i recognize all the flavors, and last time the sauce for the mussels was over reduced, i ordered a steak, blue and came overcoock, the sauce was sour and i notice no shitake mushrooms in the dish, i said to waiter that the dish was not good, that the flavor was not good. He took it to the kitchen and came back with my same dish! Wich, of course i didnt eat. The water, gave us a lousy service, that for an international restaurant should be outstanding. It was my sister's birthday and at the end i was so embarrassed because i picked the place!! I have been eating in many excelent places around the world where you enjoy the environment , the food and everything combines to give you an exceptional pleasure. This is my experience .

I've been going to Sayulita for 8 years, and I've probably eaten at Don Pedros a half dozen times. I'm not quite sure why I go back, except for the location on the beach. The food is marginal, at best.
The last time I was there, I regret that I did not return after I'd paid the check, and gotten back to my room. When I had time to do some "mental math", I realized that I'd been overcharged by at least $10. No, I couldn't have miscalculated. I even inflated the cost of the two meals and drinks we had, and the tip, trying to convince myself that the bill was OK. Well, it wasn't, and I should have returned and confronted the waiter.
Don Pedros may be an institution in Sayulita, but I would think they would try even harder to maintain quality and integrity.
Their ideal beach front location is a magnet for many tourists.
It's not fair for anyone to label negative reviews as "HATERS"................. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and there is no reason for someone to "bash' an establishment if they don't feel it's warranted.
I'll return to Sayulita, but I doubt that I'll return to Don Pedros.

I will second that. They may have had a bad day but I have always found the food delicious and well prepared and the service perfect.

Besides the fact that Damian and Nick (Don Pedros Owners) are two of the most giving, generous, and community-minded residents of Sayulita, Don Pedros offers an experience like no other in Sayulita. Many visitors and locals flock to the restaurant for what is has to offer.

Last night, I had dinner there with 7 other volunteers from the Spay and Neuter clinic. Here is a brief rundown:
-We had made an 8:30PM reservation and the table (white linen) was ready for us
-Promptly greeted and and a drink order was taken
-Drinks were brought to the table and our food order was taken
-Another round of drinks served before dinner. (Margaritas, red/white wine, beer, Perrier, tomato juice)
-The delicious focaccia bread and olive tapenade was served. (FREE of charge as always)
-All 8 dinners were served at the same time and to the appropriate diners. There was no "auctioning" of the plates.
-Food was great. We ordered 6 different menu items.
-After dinner ALL plates and silverware were cleared from the table.
-A few of the guests had another glass of wine
-We were offered dessert but had no takers
-Bill was presented without one mistake. Definitely not cheap, but that is not why we chose to go there. Worth every peso and they gladly take credit cards.

In addition, service was perfect and all waiters were very attentive. We stayed into the evening long past any other table and not a single member of the staff even hinted that we should leave. Upon our departure, the entire crew waved good by and said "adios"

All this in the middle of July, the off-season.

Thank you owners and staff at Don Pedros for providing visitors and residents a fine-dining opportunity here in Sayulita. Thank you Nick and Damian for all you do for our community.

Wow-so many point of views. So here is another.
I have lived in Sayulita for 3 years and as to many things in Sayulita is comes down to one word INCONSISTENCY.

My family and I have eaten at Don Pedros many times. Yes they have good food. Yes its pricey! The price would not seem high if they just had good service all the time.

I have been in there several times when the waiter has forgotten to bring out the delicious focaccia bread and olive tapenade. I have also been in there and have asked the waiter for the focaccia bread and olive tapenade and the waiter still did not bring it out.

I do not understand why Damian and Nick do not teach there waiters everytime you place a drink order you need to place an order for the bread. The order should include the number of customers at the table incase more that one order is needed. Forgetting the bread and the dip at one table, one time, is to many times.

Especially since the food order sometimes takes awhile to come out. If folks have bread, dip, and a drink most customers will be happy.

Also, the waiters should be informed if there is something on the menu that they can not serve that day because they do not have the product. I have been in Don Pedros a couple of time and ordered something on the menu and the waiters response was "we do not have that today" . I feel the waiter should inform the customer before ordering instead of notifying them once they have that item in there head and on there taste buds:(

Then you have the waiters on the beach that serve the rental chairs. Which I rent chairs a couple of times a week there:) But this waiters need to be more proactive. Like they will collect for the chair rental and you will not see the guy again. Then I will order a beer, 30 pesos (thats to high-should run a happy hour like noon to 4pm), and again the waiter will never come up and check to see if I need another beer, He should be trained to walk both line of chairs continually thru the day:)

And like Ian I had lunch there the other day and the food and service was awesome. Yet we must remember there is no one in town so the waiters have plenty of time to "Serve" you. So now is also the time to train the staff so everything runs the same during high season.

Don Pedros should not rely on that they have a nice location, on the beach, first restaurant most customers stumble on. They should rely on word of mouth and that word of mouth is "that the food and service are great" at Don Pedros.

I agree with Ian. We have ALWAYS had an excellent meal and attentive service at Don Pedro's. It is my favorite restaurant in Sayulita.

I have had many great meals at Don Pedro's. Due to the location, I have recently started having breakfasts there, but, unfortunately, after trying this 3 or 4 times, it is just not their "specialty" it would seem. Hard as a rock muffins, mouldy tasting toast, overcooked eggs, over salted potatoes (like maybe a spillage, it was so concentrated).
Stick with the lunches or dinners...they're usually pretty good - especially those pizzas! The service seems to run hot and cold for either. Hope these issues are just a "low season" deal.
