Calypso Wonderful Food -- great views

Posted 11 March 2006 - 08:10 PM (#1) Barbara in San Pancho

So I went to the newest Sayulita restaurant -- right across from the plaza on the second floor. Go! Its really, really good. The service is a little slow but they just opened so give them a break and just relax. We went in a big group so we got lots of tastes.

The Blacked Mahi Quesadilla appetizer and the calarmar -- delicious!
The Chinese Chicken Salad and Chicken Caeser -- wonderful, fresh and huge
The steak -- huge portion and delicious
We didn't try the pasta but I will next time.

The views of the rooftops of Sayulita are beautifl (I'll bet Evelyn Boran will be painting it soon) and the decor is fresh and fun.

The breakfasts are very tasty - very! Again, the wait staff will come along in time but how can anyone be in a hurry in Sayulita......

Prices are in the medium to high range (for Sayulita) but all the meals we've had there are HUGE and easily shared by two people. The amazing Chinese Chicken Salad is 80 pesos I think and is a huge meal for one or a large appetizer for two. A huge pork chop in pepper sauce with enough roasted potatoes and excellent mixed veg to feed an army was about 160 pesos. Couldn't finish it (though I sure tried!!). The view is great, the room is great (though the bar mural is a bit bizarre), the service is friendly and attentive and bilingual. Beer is 25 pesos, which is steep I think but so be it. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants a treat or a change. David

Thanks to all of you for the replies on prices. Sounds like a great place to try. I will be in Sayulita in a week and I can't wait!

We had a great meal here and fantastic fresh Mangoe Margaritas. Very tasty Fajitas and nice atmosphere with great mural painted behind the bar.

I was in Sayulita a few weeks ago and ate at Calypso twice. The food was excellent, as was the service. On my first visit I had the Chili Relleno dinner (8.50 us) and then the Seafood Pasta with Clams, Mussels, Calamari and Shrimp in a Tomato Saffron Creme Sauce (14.50 us). Muy Bueno! Both meals were excellent and so big I had left-overs for the next day.
For all you Creme Brulee lovers..............don't miss this. It is as good as it gets and enough for 2 generous portions. This coming from a person that never thought she could get enough!
The view of the nightlife in Sayulita is absolutely charming. Like something from an old movie.
All in all, food in Sayulita is excellent from Thai Food at El Thai to Cheeseburgers at El Bicho, it's hard to go wrong! :P

Is Calypso still open in the summer? Which nights are they closed?

Hi -- yes, Calypso is open through the summer. I don't think they take a night off, but if you're in the neighborhood, just drop in and ask them.

The food is good BUT check your bill carefully before paying it. We were overcharged and some of my friends have had the same experience.

As a local here in Sayulita, I have eaten at the resturant alot of times, and it is true you have to check the bill carefully, they were charging 17% extra for tip and not telling the guest, while we were leaving a 20% tip. So relax enjoy the food the view and the service, but check your bill carefully.

We were unimpressed by the menu and the food, but very much liked the mural over the bar and the creme brulee. We would not choose to dine here again.

i dont like calypso, many people go because is cheap and the food its extravagant but it is very mediocre. Service is horrible, for good servis nothing like Don Pedro´s and for excellent food nothing like the Byciclete.

i have to take back the comment about calypso. I went to have dinner yesterday with some friends and finally the food was very tasty and the service was excellent. i am glad to see that they try to make it better. i still think the portions are too big and i mean it, too big but the flavour is good. Just remember that if you ever go an appetizer it can be a whole meal they are so big or a salad.

the calypso was our favorite restaurant while there in sayulita. i don't care if the service is slow - we're in mexico for God's sake... take your time - enjoy! Regardless, we were catered to as well as any restaurant in the states. better than. even though they were really busy. the carne asada was phenominal... and i LOVE the goat cheese salad! our wonderful hostess, juanita of casa juanita (the best casitas EVER!!! and the best hostess!!!), recommended don pablos or calypso as a location you "won't get sick". true enough! though don pablos is WAAAAY to expensive (hello!! $11 for a double vodka soda? give me a break!), calypso will be our first and our last restaurant we eat at when we come back.

by the way... at the airport in PV... there is a cuban themed restaurant. do NOT go there. and if you do - do NOT order a bloody mary. $9 for something that cam in a 10 oz glass... and tasted like they took tomato powder and mixed it with water and lime juice. couldn't even taste the vodka. $9. did you hear me? $9!!!!!!

i think it is hard to say the food is unimpressive. it is GREAT.

say what you will about the prices (a little higher than alot of sayulita, lower than don pedros, lower than anything comparable in PV)

the service is not BAD it is slow however. if you are in a rush, it is not the right place.

awesome food, we are sad we didn't discover it until near the end of our trip

We dined at Calypso last year and had a fantastic meal. Service was great, but we were one of only 3 tables there, since it was in June. Prices were mediocre. I absolutely loved the mural above the bar, can anybody tell me who the artist is?

Ate at Calypso with a party of 13. Food was, at least, mediocre and when the bill came we were overcharged by $20. This happened to our group at Calypso, Don Pedros, and Buddha Bar. Watch out when down there!!!!!

that "overcharge" it`s called tip, usually when its a group bigger than 6 they apply the tip in the check, you shouldnt be mad about it, that`s one the cheapest places to have dinner in sayulita, people go there because portions are huge so...i dont get it.

thank you, calypso, for a wonderful thanksgiving dinner! the food was delicious and very traditional. can you serve that broccoli soup all the time? the service was wonderful, as always. i was feeling a bit homesick walking in to enjoy thanksgiving dinner at a restaurant in mexico. after a delicious bottle of wine and the most authentic and delicious thanksgiving dinner i've had outside my family's home in connecticut, i left feeling so happy and stuffed. although it would have been nice to be with my entire family 'at home', the food at calypso made me feel much less farther away than i really was! delicious!!!

They are smart to add a tip when it comes to large groups as much of the time the waiters end up getting screwed out of an appropriate tip.

What I don't agree with is the way it's done. It is sneaky to do that without specifying this policy. Many times people leave an ample tip and later realize the waiters tiped themselves as well as the customer. I've had it happen there more than once with a party of three or four.
I love their food and the prices are reasonable for a nice dinner in a great location and enviroment. Just do the math.

Over charged by $20.00 dollar's for 13 people? That comes out to $1.53 per person. About the price

Starbucks charges you for your paper cup that holds your latte. This must have been a retreat for

CPA's?

Please stay home.

I dunno about the gratuity thing, but I loved the open layout of this place. Very nice to hang out at. The food was fine--not great. The crab cakes tasted, well, like tuna cakes. The calamari was good. The margaritas were more tart than sweet and I thought delicious. Friendly staff, too.

Calypso has a great location going for it, & beautiful decor, but we found the food disappointing last week. The crab cakes were superb, very tasty. The margarita also good. But the chile rellenos AND the pasta dish we ordered (the scampi I believe) were both very wet. The rellenos were drowning in sauces, while the pasta was swimming in a milky liquid. Noticed the service was fast & furious at all the tables; perhaps they were rushing themselves that night. Will give Calypso another chance one day.
