A good and very typical Mexican beachside palapa restaurant, right in front of the surf break, very good ceviche, whole hauchinango, and dorado filets, cold beer. Nice ambiance and reasonable prices.

Great Guacamole! This was our favorite beach restaurant in Sayulita. It does not have a sign though.

Try to get Nacho as your waiter

Does it have a name? How can a visitor find this place?

Posters 4 and 5 this is about Costenos on the beach. That is the name of this topic thread, Costenos. It is at the end of Calle Delfin, the main downtown street to the beach. If you still don't find it ask any local Mexican on the beach, Donde Costenos, donde Nacho el pescador y mesero? Then go in the direction they point.

Shrimp in garlic butter was good but it took us over an hour to get our food. The waiters seemed very confused as to what they were doing, maybe they were inbetween shifts. For the price, the portions were scimpy!

Yes, sometimes the service can be slow but overall it's about on par with the rest of the village. Most people find the place tasty, friendly, and relaxing. Next time you're there, try the shrimp quesadillas and ladle on the salsa mexicana - a perfect lunch, and very reasonable.

I don't know if El Costenos still serves breakfast, but they have the best chilaquiles. Great way to start the day, then spend a lazy afternoon under the palapa drinking cold cervezas. Sure beats the cold here in Montana!

As far as I can tell, they don't serve breakfast anymore. They normally don't open until 11 or so, and then with the full lunch/supper menu. Still terrific, though!!

i cast me vote for costenos - on the beach steps way from the street on which tia adriana is on - any place you can chuck your sandals, dangle your bare feet in the warm, soft sand, drink a cold cerveza (beer) and munch on fresh shrimp ceviche while enjoying fantasttic views at dirt cheap prices rates very high in my book - i recommend that it be one's first stop in sayulita after (or before) unpacking

Is this costenos different than the other Costenos which has a topic on this forum? They sound a lot alike to me.

The very best thing about El Costeno is the Pasta de Ruperto--a fabulous shrimp dip--named after Ruperto--god bless his soul. It is to die for!!!!!!!

yeah, the pasta de camaron Ruperto is amazingly satisfying with a cold Pacifico, don't expect pasta (as in spagetti) it is a kind of a paste of mayonaise and shrimp served with tostaditas add a little salsa Huichol and YES!!!

This was the first place we ate in Sayulita and it was perfect. Good food and huge margaritias right on the beach. First night I had the pasta du Ruperto - delicious. Great snapper and shrimp dishes as well as guac. We ate and drank here several times - enjoying watching everyone and loving the dogs under our tables. This place epitomized Sayulita for us. And Manuel hooks up the drinks...

El Costenos was our favorite restaurant. Food was excellent. Best quac and shrimp around. Love the dogs under the tables. All of the waiters were great. The family that owns the restaurant are great people. Their father had Rupertos at the same place until he passed away. Has always been our family's favorite. Must try it!

i agree with the fact that the food is excellent!!! Muy buena. deliciosas. but the service is horrible, just horrible. they could do it so much better with a good staff. the only good guy is Nacho. Ask for him. the rest dont even smile, or get you what you want. but Costeno is a must.

Eh, Don't forget Manuel.....he is a good guy.....Love Nacho too.....

Also....service in Sayulita is just slow in general....that's what tequilla and cerveza is for.

Tell me, you got anything better to do, than look at the waves and wait for a meal?

We spent several hot afternoons under the palapa at El Costenos. I can't think of anywhere I would rather be right this moment.

The dogs are so sweet, the vendors are not too pushy, and all of the waiters we had were kind and friendly. Every time I ordered a margarita it came in a different sized glass (ranging from fishbowl to martini glass), but our bill was always more than reasonable.

Reading your post this morning I can truly think of no place I had rather be but under the palapa at El Costenos. We enjoyed many good meals and wonderful margaritas there in March. The waiters, in our opinion, were also wonderful. We are already planning a trip next year. We just love it. I know El Costenos will be our first stop after we check in.! I personally loved the dogs. They were very well behaved.

I am having a party for 26 in season. Can this restaurant handle that many for dinner? If not, can you recommend where we should eat?

El Costenos can handle that many. They can put tables together. Let them know ahead of time. When we were there someone was having a 50th birthday party. There must have been at least 30 people for that party. The food is great. I think you will have a wonderful time.

You would need to notify them well in advance so they can prepare for your dinner. The restaurant closes at 8pm so you would need to negotiate with them to stay open later.

WHAT has happened with Costeno's??!! Suddenly all the great waiters have left, and the service has taken a fall. The food is also taking a looooonnnggg time to come, all the tourists are complaining and the staff are all very unhappy. I hope this is short lived, whatever the reason because there has never been anything that comes close to an afternoon hanging out for a few cold ones, fresh seafood with the normal friendly service that Costeno had to offer.
