I have enjoyed reading about the people who are bringing their young families and looking to relocate. Our trip involves my adult kids who live all over the province so it will be a special time for us all to be together, no doubt a once in a lifetime thing... What I am asking for is some reassurance that all is well and safe in Sayulita. Of course one must be street wise etc. I already find myself saying nothing good happens after midnight, but I don't want to be the nagging Mom and ruin everybodies vacation. Thanks in advance for any kind words.

Sayulita Here We Come I need to calm my nerves
Posted 24 January 2012 - 12:39 PM (#1)
Hello People of the Forum. I will be heading to Sayulita from Canada in a few more sleeps... I seem to have lost my excitment due to all the recent deaths and beatings that have been on the news all too frequently. Another Canadian beating was reported on the news last night. (okay I guess I better not bring my laptop)

I don't think you will get any negatives here. Just tell the family to use good judgment, as with any vacation that you go to in any part of the world. I have traveled to different parts of Mexico (and around the world) and as long as you don't flash the iPhone, iPods, tablets, computers, jewelry, and money in public, you'll be okay. I never took a purse on any of my journeys; all money was in my pockets.
Lock yourselves in your casa at night, and when you leave the casa, lock the doors and windows. You would do this if you were in a hotel, right? Same applies when in a village; just use good judgment and caution, and you will have a marvelous time in this wonderful town!

The Canadian woman that was beaten was in the all-inclusive Hotel Rui in Mazatlan, although she was vacationing with her husband she apparently wasn't with him at the time of the incident because nobody seems to know what happened to her. As of last night, they hadn't released the identities of any suspects but what we do know for sure is that the Rui is full of guests from all over the world, until we know more I'm not comfortable making any correlation between her beating and the general state of security in Mexico. I'd be willing to bet that there was a woman beaten somewhere in Canada yesterday too...

Unfortunately the reality is that sensational news sells newspapers and sensational reporting also makes people turn into the TV newscasts. You will never see a headline that reads "1.6 million Canadians traveled safely to and from Mexico last year" which is the reality of the situation. Your odds of being in the wrong place at the wrong time in Edmonton are higher than those of tourists that visit Mexico. I urge you to read this article from the Calgary Herald as it may help to put your worries into perspective. http://www.calgaryhe...1183/story.html
We always use our regular common sense when we travel. We lock up when we go out, windows and doors, we don't leave valuables on decks or in the yard/ palapa unattended. Common sense. We lock passports and valuables into the safe in our unit for safe keeping. We lock the laptop in there when we go out.
We just returned from a 2 week visit to Sayulita over Christmas, and had no problems whatsoever. Our kids have been coming with us for years, sometimes bringing a friend or 2 with them. We have 3 daughters that are now aged 16-20 years old. When they were younger they would go to the beach themselves, (I encourage the buddy system, there is safety in numbers) and we have never had an issue. This last trip they would go out during the day, and meet us later for lunch or dinner. They have gone out for ice cream or horchata after 10pm in a group without issue. There are always many people in the plaza in the evening, it is safe there. It is a small town of 2500 people, not a major city like Acapulco with 1,000,000 residents. (even there you are statistically very safe, unless you are out at 3am looking for hookers and blow).
My wife and I have gone out to listen to live music, and walked home after 1230/1am with no issues. (maybe later than that once or twice) Walking home late like this is not something I would do in many major North American cities, however I feel safer in Sayulita. I've spent at least a year of my life in Sayulita over the past 10 years, never had an issue. Put your worries aside, the people are friendly, and very welcoming. You will have a great time.

We have just returned from a week in Sayulita (more like Paradise). We were located at the extreme north end of town and had a long walk either on the road or beach into town. We walked this route frequently and at all times of the day and night.....one time we even walked home at 3am. It was nothing short of amazing, peaceful and safe !!! I agree you need to make sure things are locked when you are out, but we all do that at home anyway. Enjoy your time in Sayulita........
