I have seen a few people using spinning gear in the surf and once saw Captain Pablo (?) using a fly rod to catch some small fish in the close-in surf. I have done a fair amount of fresh water fly fishing but would like to try to the surf. If anyone has any suggestions (line, leader, tippet, bugs, weight, etc.) I would appreciate hearing from you. Also, if this is a complete waste of time please let me know. I have already hauled down way more "stuff" than I will ever need. Thanks.

from the rocks in front of villa amor and wading from the beach at playa de los muertos you may find some good opportunities. for any real exciting action you will need to hire a boat (dumays on the beach). but if you fish for sanity as i do then the beach is the way to go. i have caught sierra (spanish mackeral) and toros (jack crevalle) as well as ribbon fish and rooster fish from the beach.
spinning tackle with ten pound line and any sinking lure that resembiles a sardine will work well. spoons and anything else with some flash will also draw some fish. the sierras and rooster fish are good to eat. don't take your top dollar fly rods as the airport people will break them. buy some cheap gear that you can lose with no tears. the trip is rough.
i don't fly fish so tippets and the rest mean nothing to me. i use a spinning rod that i usually use for trout in texas. i use a BIG plastic transport tube and stuff it full of tee shirts, drawers, socks etc. that is my checked bag and everything else is my carry-on.

Gracias Revbob. I am strictly a sanity-motivated fisherman so your advice is much appreciated. I am also a catch and release guy. I try to name any fish that I release and if I am lucky enough to run out of names I quit. Hope to see you sometime at the church-of-the-surf. Saludos.
